The EMA Green Seal for Sustainable Production celebrates its 20th anniversary throughout 2024. After a record-breaking 2023, the Seal continues to pick up momentum with significant projects such as "The Bear," "House of the Dragon," and "IF," earning the certification.
EMA hosts the 2024 EMA IMPACT Summit, presented by Toyota Motor North America, at the Pendry West Hollywood. The sold-out event brings together leaders in entertainment, politics, advocacy, science, and more to share action solutions to our climate crisis. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) honored EMA CEO Debbie Levin with its 2024 Changemaker Award at the annual Earth Day Dinner in San Francisco. Along with Debbie, EWG honored Assemblymember Laura Friedman, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, Assemblymember Chris Holden, and Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi.
EMA hosts its 33rd annual EMA Awards at the beautiful and sustainable Las Palmas Sunset Studios. EMA honors the iconic Laura Dern with our Ongoing Commitment Award. The legendary Sheryl Crow performs and introduces Laura for a heartfelt moment. Avatar: The Way of Water win best feature, and Common Ground win best documentary. Toyota Motor North America presents the 33rd EMA Awards.
2023
2023 sees the most EMA Green Seal for sustainable production recipients in its history, with over 300 productions earning the honor. Further, many student filmmakers earn our EMA Green Seal for Students, preparing the next wave of artists to take on larger projects sustainably.
EMA ends 2023 with a special holiday event sponsored by Traditional Medicinals (TM), celebrating regenerative agriculture, food as medicine, and TM's incredible commitment to sustainability. The event features a panel including EMA Board Member Nikki Reed, TM's Jamie Horst & Taryn Forrelli, and documentarian Rebecca Tickell. Furthermore, EMA Board Member Ed Begley Jr. reads from his memoir, and artist Mon RovÎa performs an intimate music set. EMA Board Members Angus Mitchell and Mara Gourdine host the event.

EMA partners with Artists for Amazonia for the Yasuni Referendum Day of Action! EMA and many celebrity Board Members share a video calling for a rally to raise awareness about the Yasuní and turn this referendum into a victory for people and the planet.
Toyota North America presents the 2023 EMA IMPACT Summit. The sixth annual Summit takes place at the Pendry West Hollywood. This year's Summit highlights climate storytelling and Hollywood's efforts to go green. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter partners with Apple TV+ for its second annual "Pictures for the Planet" series, featuring the cast of 'Extrapolations.' Other highlights include a keynote from Captain Paul Watson, a live recording of the 'Naked Lunch' podcast ft. EMA Board Member Ed Begley Jr., a panel of indigenous filmmakers, and content from EMA's Activist Board Members. The event receives over 15 billion media impressions.
2022
Toyota Motor North America presents the 2022 EMA Awards hosted at the historic Sunset Studios, one of the first studios to attain our EMA Green Seal. The Awards, hosted by EMA Board Member Wendie Malick and legendary funnyman David Spade, focus on the role of family, activism, and solutions in saving our planet. In addition, the evening recognizes Billie Eilish, Maggie Baird, and 'Overheated' by Support + Feed with the EMA Missions in Music Award. Further, EMA Awards Board Member Nikki Reed with our Innovator Award for her work on her eco-friendly lifestyle and jewelry brand, BaYou With Love. EMA Launches Season Three of its popular EMA Talks series. The season features conversations between environmental leaders in business, fashion, activism, health, education, and more. The generous support of City National Bank makes the program possible.
Toyota North America presents the 2022 EMA IMPACT Summit. The fifth annual summit takes place at the Pendry West Hollywood. IMPACT features an array of environmental solutions from health to equity to technology. Further, EMA partners with The Hollywood Reporter for the "Pictures for the Planet" panel series, which features speakers such as Eli Roth, Fran Drescher, and Wolfgang Puck. Led by Wawa Gatheru, EMA's newly formed Activist Board discusses ethical climate storytelling. Also, EcoAge hosts a series of sustainable fashion panels as part of its new GCFA Talks. EMA will roll out all of its panels as exclusive EMA talks throughout 2022, presented by City National Banks.

2021
EMA rolls out the green carpet for its first in-person EMA Awards since 2019 (after going virtual in 2020). Jeff Goldblum hosts the evening with a humorous "hosting assist" from EMA Board Members Malin Akerman & Jack Donnelly. The Awards honors long-time EMA Board Member Ed Begley Jr with the EMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Further, The Hip Hop Caucus receives the EMA Global Justice Award, and Karla Welch & Sasha Markova the EMA Innovator Award. Finally, "No Sudden Move" wins the feature film award. The event occurs at EMA Corporate Board Member Angus Mitchell's Gearbox LA. In addition, Beyond Meat, H&M Foundation, Montage International, and Toyota present the 2021 EMA Awards.
EMA Talks continue throughout 2021. In partnership with the Climate & Health Foundation and The Climate & Health Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, a series of EMA Talks discusses how climate change affects public health and the importance of listening to experts. Other EMA Talks cover veganism, youth activism, greening the fashion industry (in partnership with the H&M Foundation), and extreme weather. The Program is made possible with continued support from City National Bank, an RBC Company.
EMA CEO Debbie Levin joins the University of Colorado Climate & Health Program and the Climate and Health Foundation at the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland. The CU Climate and Health Program and the Climate and Health Foundation hosts a weekend gathering for #ClimateMedicine. The event features the White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy and Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Katherine Hayhoe.
Two hundred twenty-nine productions receive the EMA Green Seal for sustainable production. Further, the Program expands with the new EMA Green Seal for Students. The EMA Green Seal for Students is a recognition program honoring progress in sustainable production for scripted student-produced content. The Program is in partnership with the Green Film School Alliance, the Sustainable Production Alliance, and PGA Green.
The EMA IMPACT Summit returns after a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic. The Pendry West Hollywood hosts the event, featuring keynote speeches, panel discussions, and activations focused on environmental solutions. EMA Executive Board Co-Chair, Lance Bass hosts the 30th annual EMA Awards, but with a slight twist. The first-ever EMA Virtual Awards is held over YouTube live stream on August 21st, 2020, and successfully receives over 70,000 views from around the world. The 2020 EMA Virtual Awards recognizes brilliant environmental messaging in the media on environmental justice, water issues, public health, and much more. Award recipients include “Deep Waters,” “Shark Tank,” “Mixed-ish,”“Chernobyl” etc. Presenters and winners include EMA Board Members Van Jones, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Eric Christian Olsen, Emmanuelle Chriqui as well as Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Oliver, and more. The event is presented by Barry’s, City National Bank, ECOS, and H&M Foundation.
To continue its leadership in environmental storytelling, EMA launches the Environmental Media Network (EMN) across its social platforms. EMN shares tips, talks, and solutions for a healthier and sustainable future. The network includes co-branded series pairing EMA’s network of Celebrity Ambassadors, including several Board Members, with experts at Harvard C-Change, The Knowledge Society, and more. EMN produces ongoing “EMA Talks: Reel Science” conversations such as Eric Christian Olsen and Dr. Aaron Bernstein on Climate Change and COVID-19, Madelaine Petsch and Isabelle Grandic on Alternatives in the Food Industry, Nikki Reed, Sarah Wright Olsen, and Carmen Messerlian on Environmental Impacts on Family Health, and many more. EMN also features past EMA videos, including PSAs and IMPACT speeches. EMN generated over half a million views and over two million impressions on social media in its first month.
EMA awards its first ever EMA School Garden Grants. City National Bank, America’s Premier Private and Business Bank® sponsors the grants. In December, EMA launched a two-tiered grant competition for Los Angeles schools to help students benefit from shared urban garden experiences and inspire them to take action on behalf of nature.

Liza Koshy Hosts the second annual EMA Honors Benefit Gala at a private residence in the Pacific Palisades. EMA Honors recognizes environmental trailblazers, leaders, and champions in the arts, business, and activism. This year’s Honorees include Bryce Dallas Howard receiving the EMA Green Parent Award, Diane Warren receiving the EMA Missions in Music Award, Jonathan Safran Foer receiving the EMA Literary Impact Award, Joshua Jackson receiving the EMA Ongoing Commitment Award, Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks receiving the EMA Corporate Responsibility Award, and Nina Dobrev receiving the EMA Futures Award. EMA hosts its third annual EMA IMPACT Summit at the Montage Beverly Hills. The two-day business summit shares the message that a circular green economy is possible. Innovator Amy Keller and Pure Plus+ win the $50K EMA Future Innovator of the Year Grant. The summit features a wide range of speakers, from business leaders to young activists. Highlights include Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, former Head of EPA Gina McCarthy, and Jaden Smith. The event is presented again by 19-year Partner, Toyota Motor North America.
EMA Board Member Karrueche Tran Hosts the 29th annual EMA Awards at the Montage Beverly Hills. The Awards recognizes environmental messaging in the media. Mayim Bialik announces the new Paul Junger Witt Award for Comedy in honor of the late EMA Board Member. "Isle of Dogs" wins best feature and "Eating Animals" wins best documentary. To celebrate Earth Day, EMA hosts a school garden luncheon at University High School Charter in Los Angeles. Along with Presenting Sponsor City National Bank and longtime partner Kellogg Garden Supplies, EMA celebrates the re-launch of its program with testimonials from students and celebrity garden mentors. EMA CEO, Debbie Levin announces future plans for the program and thanks all of the teachers who have worked hard to incorporate the gardens into their classes. EMA Board Members Malin Akerman, Katie Aselton, Lance Bass, Sarah Wright Olsen, Wendie Malick, and Constance Zimmer attend the event. Rocco's Tavern provides a healthy lunch made with produce from the program's various gardens.
EMA partners with H&M for overall partnership beginning with the launch of three celebrity videos bringing attention to H&M’s garment recycling initiative. EMA works closely with the H&M Foundation and their Global Change Awards in Stockholm. The videos feature EMA Board Members Malin Akerman, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Karrueche Tran, and Constance Zimmer. H&M has been a leader in the fashion sector when it comes to sustainable fashion. Launched in Spring 2013, H&M was the first fashion company to launch a clothing collecting initiative worldwide. Garment Recycling is available in every H&M store around the world. EMA and H&M launch the videos at an event that includes a panel discussion featuring EMA CEO, Debbie Levin, EMA Board Members Malin Akerman and Constance Zimmer, and H&M.
EMA heads to Napa for its annual EMA Corporate Board Retreat. Corporate Board Chair Doug Coleman of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. leads Corporate Board Members on a series of exercises that help define the goals of the Board. The role of business in creating a regenerative green economy and authentic messaging are the main topics of discussion.
2018
EMA takes a field trip to the ECOS facility in Cypress, CA. A longtime supporter of EMA, ECOS makes plant-powered cleaning products at a zero-waste, carbon neutral facility powered by solar energy! EMA Board Members Frances Fisher and Constance Zimmer join EMA CEO Debbie Levin on the tour. It is crucial for EMA to inform consumers about making educated buying choices that are safer for their health and the health of the planet.
EMA partners with Barry’s Bootcamp to help craft an EMA Sustainability Standard for the fitness sector. Together, they help Barry’s Bootcamp launch its mission to become the first fitness company to receive the EMA Sustainable Standard. The celebratory party features food made from organic locally-sourced ingredients, biodegradable plates and utensils, water refill stations, and no balloons.
In the leadup to one of the most consequential elections in generations, EMA teams with League of Conservation Voters & Rise Up Foundation to launch two “get out the vote” videos for social media, urging voters to research which candidates and legislation reflect their own environmental concerns and to “vote green.” Both videos ask voters to consider the planet when choosing a candidate. EMA Board Members Asher Levin and John Quigley create the videos, starring Board Members Malin Akerman, Lance Bass, Ed Begley Jr., Wendie Malick, Scottie Thompson, Constance Zimmer, and EMA CEO Debbie Levin.
EMA partners with Biossance, a sustainable beauty biotech company, on a viral social media campaign for Shark Week. The video features EMA Board Members Constance Zimmer, Ashlan Cousteau, and Lance Bass, and calls on the audience to vote with their wallets and refuse to buy any cosmetics that contain animal-derived ingredients. The substance squalene, popularly used in cosmetic products and touted for its moisturizing qualities, is featured in the video because it is traditionally harvested from the livers of deep-sea sharks. Thankfully plant-based alternatives such as squalene (made from sugarcane) exist. The video receives over 22K views in two days.

The 2018 EMA Awards, presented by Toyota Motor Sales, is held the second night of IMPACT at the Montage Beverly Hills. EMA Board Member Amber Valletta hosts the evening. The night includes a star-studded green carpet featuring Bill Nye, Jenna Dewan, Leona Lewis, and many EMA Board Members including Jordana Brewster, Sarah Wright Olsen, and Lance Bass. The show gets some comic relief with a special guest appearance by comedian Pamela Adlon. Highlights include "Flint" winning Best Picture, a special acceptance video for Best Documentary from the legendary Jane Goodall, The Montage Beverly Hills receiving the first EMA Green Seal for Hospitality, and EMA Board Member T.A. The first annual EMA Honors Gala, presented by Toyota Motor Sales, takes place in an elegant private residence in Los Angeles. Ellen Pompeo Hosts the evening's event. An intimate group of attendees enjoys a vegan sit-down dinner prepared by Ludo Lefebvre, four inspiring speeches from EMA Honorees, and an exclusive performance from the legendary Snoop Dogg. The evening focuses on trailblazers and icons who have dedicated their lives to environmental stewardship. Honorees include EMA Female Lifetime Achievement recipient Jane Fonda, EMA Male Lifetime Achievement recipient Ray Halbritter, EMA Futures Award recipient Elizabeth Olsen, and EMA Corporate Responsibility recipient Mike Sullivan. Another theme for the evening is EMA’s role as the planet’s storyteller and the only voice loud enough to beat the big polluters. A live auction is held to fundraise for EMA’s ongoing programs. EMA partners with hardwood floor experts, Bona, to repurpose the beautiful rustic white oak hardwood floor from the 2017 EMA Awards green room. With the help of Green For All and Board Member Van Jones, EMA learns that Sweet Dreams, a transitional facility in San Bernardino, CA that empowers homeless women with young children to build a better future, desperately needed a new floor. The perfect home is found for the perfect floor. In January, Bona Certified Craftsman®, WC Hardwood Floors Inc. install the floor. The repurposed floor is unveiled (along with a year’s supply of Bona’s eco-friendly hardwood floor care products) to the delight of the families living in the facility. From one home to another, a little change can make a big impact.
2017
EMA has a record year for its EMA Green Seal program with 104 projects receiving the Seal; 29 projects receive the EMA Gold Seal for scoring more than 125 points of a possible 200.
The 27th Annual EMA Awards are held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The show is Hosted by EMA Board Member Jaden Smith and presented by Toyota and Lexus. Solutions are the focus of the night, galvanizing the room and those watching on social media to take action to help the planet. The Awards present Michael Bloomberg the Lifetime Achievement Award, Natalie Portman the Ongoing Commitment Award, Alan J. Fuerstman and Montage International the EMA Corporate Responsibility Award, Russell Simmons the Missions in Music Award, and John Paul DeJoria the EMA Innovator Award. The night’s hashtag has a reach of over 48 million and trends on Twitter in Los Angeles. Further, post-show social media campaigns include three viral videos that receive a combined 10 MILLION views on Facebook and Youtube!
EMA joins Caruso and Kellogg Garden Products to break ground on its first school garden of the year. EMA Board members & long-time EMA garden mentors Amy Smart, Sarah Wright Olsen, Anna Anissimova, and new friend Aidan Gallagher, join the fifth graders at Hancock Park Elementary to build a pollinator garden.
EMA premieres its first annual EMA IMPACT Summit, a two-day business summit to focus on impact investing, innovation and solutions supporting a circular economy. It features keynote speeches by noted celebrities, corporate and business leaders, entrepreneurs and political leaders. The content includes keynotes, conversations, panel discussions and our first EMA Future Innovator of the Year Grant (a la Shark Tank), resulting in over one billion media impressions. EMA joins family-owned dairy company Clover Sonoma, actress Jordana Brewster, NBA All-Star Baron Davis, and EMA Board Members Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse to create a call-to-action non-GMO PSA titled “It’s Up to Us,” with a goal of inspiring individuals and families to use their voices and demand more non-GMO options at whichever grocery stores they patronize. The video gets over 300K views in its first month.
EMA launches the “It’s Up to Us” PSA on social media and at its favorite family friendly, EMA Green Seal Restaurant, Au Fudge. The event, which features yummy Clover Dairy inspired snacks and drinks, brings together friends, press, and concerned parents to help raise awareness about the need for more non-GMO products.
EMA Board Members join other influential names in the entertainment industry, such as Robert Redford and Elle Fanning, in calling for the protection of America’s wild horses and burros. 2016
EMA continues its #GreenMySchool Program, presented by Birds Eye Vegetables, with longtime Board Member Constance Zimmer. Constance returns to her roots to build a school garden at the Heritage Museum of Orange County, CA. Dozens of bright-eyed students get their hands dirty in organic soil with Constance, planting a variety of vegetables and fruits in four raised garden beds. The amazing students of Hector Godinez Fundamental High School and the Mitchell School, Kellogg Garden Supplies, and the Heritage Museum OC make the day possible.
EMA supports the grass-roots movement opposing construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. CEO Debbie Levin joins Board Members Frances Fisher, Ray Halbritter, Daryl Hannah, Nikki Reed, Ian Somerhalder, John Quigley and Shailene Woodley (as well as Jane Fonda and Mark Ruffalo) in North Dakota to call for a stop in the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. In addition to participating in the peaceful protests, EMA hosts speaker panels that are live-streamed on Facebook.
In partnership with LineupMedia.fm, EMA launches the Environmental Media Network. The Network consists of the two podcasts Going Green With Asher Levin, and Organic Lunch With Debbie Levin. Both shows feature interviews with EMA’s celebrity Board Members as well as other green icons, activists, and scientists.
The 26th Annual Environmental Media Awards are held under the stars on New York Street at Warner Bros. Studios. The show, presented by Toyota, Lexus, and Calvert Investments, is hosted by Board Member Nicole Richie. With a focus on the future of environmental messaging and activism, the show awards Jaden Smith and Shailene Woodley the Male and Female EMA Futures Awards, Moby the Missions in Music Award, Robyn O’Brien the Green Parent Award, and United Nations PRI the Corporate Responsibility Award. The Awards are a massive success with two billion press impressions and an additional 50+ million impressions on social media. The evening’s dinner is prepared by James Beard Award Winning Chefs Jon and Vinny.

EMA Joins the Sierra Club and the National Park Service for National Park Service Centennial: Give Back Day. EMA President Debbie Levin, EMA Board Members Darby Stanchfield and Karrueche Tran, and Thomas Middleditch, star of HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” join the festivities, which include the planting of native species, speakers, and exhibits. EMA Launches its Healthy Family Seal and Trusted Partners program to help guide eco-friendly and healthy shopping choices. The companies and products that receive the Healthy Family Seal meet EMA’s high-quality standards for how they produce their goods, what their goods are made of, and how the company communicates with the public.
EMA hosts its second Speaker Series event at CSUN titled: “Two Months Later: Porter Ranch & the Role of Environmental Disasters in the 2016 Election”. The discussion, moderated by EMA Board Member Hart Bochner, features Paula Cracium, President of the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council; Alexander Nagy, Senior Organizer for the Food and Water Watch/Save Porter Ranch; Scott Smith, Lead Scientist at the Water Defense Fund; Graciela Geyer, Campaign Representative for My Generation Campaign at the Sierra Club; Vien Truong, Director of Green For All; Loraine Lundquist, Faculty Associative at the CSUN Institute for Sustainability; Stevie Ruiz, Assistant Professor at the CSUN Chicana and Chicano Studies Department; and Henry Stern, Senior Policy Advisor at the State Senator Fran Pavley’s Office. The discussion focuses on the impact of domestic environmental disasters on this year’s presidential election.
In partnership with Earth Day Texas, EMA hosts “Celebrities for Change Gala” on Earth Day in Dallas, Texas. The Gala features EMA President Debbie Levin, Board Members Malin Akerman, Lance Bass, Ed Begley, Jr., Frances Fisher, Wendie Malick, Carter Oosterhouse, Carla Shamberg, Amy Smart, Michael Turchin, John Quigley, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Daryl Wein. The audience and talent share laughs, stories, and green-living tips. From climate change to recycling, the event covers a lot of ground. Furthermore, it sends a huge message to the rest of the world, showing Los Angeles and Dallas standing together on these issues.
EMA launches its 2016 #GreenMySchool program in Board Member Lance Bass’ hometown of Clinton, MS. The program, presented by Birds Eye Vegetables, sends celebrities home to create school gardens and teach kids the importance of vegetables and agriculture. Lance joins students from his old school, Eastside Elementary, for a fun day of gardening and learning. The event receives over 138 million press impressions with an additional eight million impressions on social media.
EMA hosts a booth at Disney’s Environmentality Fair at the Disney Grand Central Creative Campus.
EMA hosts its first newly minted Speaker Series Event “Microplastics vs. the Ocean: The Hidden Danger” in Santa Monica. The panel includes Dr. Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins of 5 Gyres, Asher Levin of EMA, Dr. Stephanie Wear of The Nature Conservancy, Richard Bloom, and EMA Board Member Amy Smart as the moderator. The discussion focuses on the impacts of and solutions to plastic pollution in our oceans.
EMA partners with Participant Media to help promote “The Magic Beach App”. The app teaches children how to read, spell, and take care of our oceans and coasts. EMA designs an infographic on beach litter to help raise awareness for the app.

Au Fudge becomes the first restaurant to receive an EMA Green Seal. The restaurant is owned by Jessica Biel, EMA Board Members Estee Stanley and Kimberly Muller, as well as Joey Gonzalez, Jonathan Rollo, Monica Saunders-Weinberg, and Terrace Tower. By adhering to EMA standards and continuing to monitor all menu, event, and boutique items, Au Fudge receives the honor for its commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability. The Salon is in partnership with EMA’s friends at the Sierra Club, who kick off their “Ready for 100 Campaign.”

EMA announces its Speaker Series. The series teams EMA up with the most important Social and Environmental NGOs for engaging conversations, panels, and keynotes with the brightest minds from all over the globe. Videos and podcasts of the discussions are made available online.
EMA hosts a Salon with the Sierra Club at the RYOT studios in Venice to celebrate the launch of EMA’s #ActInParis virtual reality campaign. EMA President Debbie Levin and Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, give speeches about the importance of COP21.
EMA works with RYOT News (acquired by HuffPost) and the Sierra Club to create the first virtual reality (VR) PSA. The video, narrated by Jared Leto, takes viewers to Portage Glacier in Alaska to experience the devastating effects of climate change getting millions of media impressions.
EMA hosts a Salon at Founders Norman & Lynn Lear’s estate to educate and motivate people to tell their elected leaders to #ActInParis at COP21. EMA Director of Business Development, Asher Levin, and Executive Director of the Sierra Club, Michael Brune, give speeches.

The 25th Annual Environmental Media Awards are held in the Steven Ross Theater at Warner Bros. Studios, with a Gala following on New York Streets in the backlot. The show is hosted by Lance Bass. President Debbie Levin begins the show with a look back at EMA’s first 25 years and announces EMA’s Membership Program. EMA honors Van Jones with the organization’s inaugural EMA GreenBiz Global Innovator Award. George Miller receives EMA’s Lifetime achievement award. Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristin Davis, Don Henley, and Zem and James Joaquin are EMA’s other top Inductees. “Interstellar” wins best feature film. The Awards are broadcasted live on Fusion Network and receive millions of press and social media impressions.

The campaign contains PSAs and accompanying photo essays featuring EMA Board Members Malin Akerman, Frances Fisher, Sara Gilbert, and Constance Zimmer, along with Jordana Brewster, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ali Landry, Jillian Michaels, Sharon Osbourne, and Molly Sims. The campaign reaches over 20 million media impressions with both PSAs premiering on nationally broadcasted programs: CBS’s “The Talk” and NBC’s “The Today Show.”
EMA attends the Red-Carpet Premiere of Disney’s “The Monkey Kingdom” at Pacific Theaters at the Grove, followed by their inaugural Sustainable Earth Month Family Celebration. Celebrities, LA tastemakers, bloggers, and guests all come out to celebrate sustainability. The event encourages activities for the entire family, and local and organic foods are provided as EMA gathers to celebrate. EMA partners with the UTA Foundation for their annual “UTA Green Expo.” The event includes booths from Earth Friendly Products, Electronic Recyclers, Naturepedic, Gardein, and a showcase for Toyota’s new hydrogen-powered concept, the Mirai.
EMA takes its EMA School Garden Program national. Partnering with Gardein and Birds Eye Vegetables, EMA launches #GreenMySchool, taking celebrities back to their hometowns to build sustainable gardens in their elementary schools allowing celebrities the chance to give back to their communities, educate children on the importance of organically grown produce and reinforce EMA’s mission to link the concept of environmental sustainability and nutrition.
EMA produces the PSA titled “That’s KXL.” The spot features Willie Nelson and Neil Young with a performance video adding additional voices to the movement to stop plans to build the Keystone Pipeline. EMA is happy to report that plans to build the pipeline have officially been stalled and so far there is no drilling.
EMA and Board Member Darby Stanchfield launch EMA’s “Don’t Be Plastic” program, installing a hydration station in the makeup trailer for ABC’s “Scandal,” partnering with EMA Corporate Board Member, Star Waggons. “Scandal” saved over 1000 plastic bottles per week on their production.

EMA re-launches ema-online.org with a new look.
EMA launches a partnership with the Burkle Global Impact Initiative and the UN Foundation to present a series of salons on pressing environmental issues. Adrian Grenier and Peter Glatzer, co-founders of SHFT.com, and Barry A Cik, Founder of Naturepedic, speak about “The Sustainable Economy” in the first salon. It is held at Wondros, with over 70 guests and coverage in The Hollywood Reporter, EMA’s exclusive media partner. The second salon, “Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology: What is it and How does it work?” focuses on the technology for new Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles and the future of the automotive industry. It is held at the home of EMA Executive Board Officer David Margulies, with Jana Hartline, Toyota’s Environmental Communications Executive, and engineers, Craig Scott and Jaycie Chitwood.
The EMA Green Seal recognition program continues with over 250 awardees to date. This year is the biggest yet with 59 recipients!

EMA produces PSAs featuring celebrities calling for an end to fracking with 25 celebrities appearing in “What The Frack.” Along with The Wilderness Society, EMA produced spots celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Wilderness Act. The Wilderness Act was created to protect places “where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man,” and has protected more than 110 million acres of wilderness from coast to coast. The spot features EMA Board Members Wendie Malick, Lance Bass, and Darby Stanchfield, along with William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Madison Burngarner (San Francisco Giants), Cheryl Strayed (author of WILD), Dylan Johnson (Alpine Climber), and Keri Herman (Olympic skier). Before global awareness of the potential dangers of GMO’s in our food, EMA hosts a Speakers Salon with CEO, Debbie Levin and guest speaker Robyn O’Brien, a former food industry analyst who founded the AllergyKids Foundation. Robyn, a leader in the mission to label GMO’s on consumer goods offers insight and detailed analysis from her research into the impact of the global food system on our health. Attendees include Kristen Bell, Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore and many others.
Culver City receives Silver Certification from the California Green Communities and SoCal Edison. EMA Young Hollywood Board member Rachelle Lefevre is on hand to present the award.

EMA partners with the Hollywood Health & Society Norman Lear Center at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism for a special screening of the award-winning documentary Chasing Ice for over 150 writers and showrunners. The documentary follows photographer James Balog as he captures a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. Climate change experts Dr. Josh Willis and Dr. Paul Bunje speak after the screening in hopes of inspiring writers to include more environmental themes in their work.

EMA returns to the Sundance Film Festival (with Malin Akerman) for the second year with its partner Brita, debuting a new documentary about the music industry’s growing commitment to sustainable touring. Brita replaces over 50,000 bottles of water at the Sundance Festival via the Nalgene reusable bottles and Brita hydration stations.
Throughout the year, EMA Young Hollywood Board members including Malin Akerman, Lance Bass, Mehcad Brooks, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Francesca Eastwood, Beau Garrett, Ginnifer Goodwin, Rachelle Lefevre, Carter Oosterhouse, Amy Smart, Emily VanCamp, and Constance Zimmer, in addition to Ali Larter and Mary Louise Parker, visit EMA’s 16 sponsored school gardens (including three new ones), generously lending their time and support as school garden mentors. The gardens provide lessons that not only teach about healthy eating, but help to improve cognitive and social skills. At one school, the hands-on experience students gained working in the garden helped improve the school’s overall science scores by nearly 60% in a single year.

EMA and SoCal Edison continue their ongoing partnership with California Green Communities, a community-based effort that encourages cities to use environmentally sound practices through water conservation, efficient transportation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and other activities. Throughout the year, awards are presented to the cities of Claremont, Culver City, Riverside, and Simi Valley for their commitments and progress towards sustainability.

Reverse graffiti, or “clean tagging,” is a method of creating art by removing dirt and grime from a filthy surface. The video goes viral and is viewed over half a million times.

EMA partners with Brita FilterForGood on the Brita FilterForGood Film Project hosting a competition in conjunction with the Sundance Film Festival. The event (with Emmanuelle Chriqui) is part of a campaign to shed light on water issues across the U.S. Brita FilterForGood makes the legendary Sundance Film Festival a water bottle-free event and provides 40,000 FilterForGood Nalgene bottles and Brita Hydration Hubs for Festival attendees.
EMA’s Young Hollywood Board (YHB) meets for the first time to discuss pressing environmental issues and how members can best use their celebrity status to create environmental awareness and inspire positive change. The YHB continues to expand and their involvement with the EMA School Gardens program continues to grow. EMA joins forces with the largest green consumer show in North America, bringing the EMA Awards to Toronto! World-renowned scientist Dr. David Suzuki receives the International Award of Excellence along with the documentary, Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands, Land of Destiny, Down2Earth, and popular CBC reality series, Dragon’s Den, are also honored. EMA partners with event sponsor Green Giant on the inaugural “Green Awards,” celebrating individuals across the country who are making a difference for the environment. The awards bring together three finalists in each of four categories: Green Parent, Green Civic Leader, Green Entrepreneur, and Green Local Organizer. Over fifty thousand people vote online to choose the four winners, each of whom receive twenty-five thousand dollars to expand their environmental projects. EMA partners with The Artists & Athletes Alliance and UCLA for an evening with Philippe Cousteau, CEO of Earth Echo International and Special Correspondent for CNN, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Philippe talks about his recent expedition to The Arctic Circle to study global warming and provides an update on the Gulf Oil Spill.
EMA continues its partnerships with Southern California Edison (SCE) and Green Seal in the California Green Communities (CGC) program, which recognizes environmental achievement and fosters innovative ways for participating cities to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, building vibrant, sustainable communities.

EMA teams up with Lowes, Rebuilding Together, and Carter Oosterhouse’s Carter’s Kids to construct a brand new garden and playground, as well as renovate houses in the neighborhood surrounding Nueva Esperanza Charter Academy in San Fernando, CA. EMA YHB Members Amy Smart, Carter Oosterhouse, Ali Larter and husband Hayes MacArthur, as well as Beau Garrett assist the LA Conservation Corps with their final touches in the beautiful EMA garden.
EMA holds a Show-Runners Briefing at the offices of Executive Board members CAA to discuss story lines, issues advised by many of the national environmental organizations, and green production. Creative teams representing half-hour, hour scripted, and reality series all participate.
The 21st Annual Environmental Media Awards, hosted by Emmanuelle Chriqui, Constance Zimmer, and Perrey Reeves, are held at Warner Bros. Studios and streamed live for the first time by Livestream. Justin Timberlake receives the Futures Award, Marc Nathanson receives the Board of Directors Ongoing Commitment Award, Southern California Edison receives the Corporate Responsibility Award, and PGA Green receives the Green Production Award. EMA begins its third decade!
EMA celebrates the first anniversary of the EMA School Gardens Program with a luncheon at The Learning Garden at Venice High School. EMA Young Hollywood Board Chair, Amy Smart, emcees a program focusing on the importance of healthy foods in schools. Executive Chef Mary Sue Milliken and the Border Grill Truck serve an organic meal incorporating fresh organic vegetables and herbs from EMA’s partner schools.
As the School Gardens program continues to thrive, the EMA Young Hollywood Board continues to grow; new members include Malin Akerman, Cassidy Horn, Cody Horn, Ali Larter, Ben Lear, Bree Lear, Maddie Lear, and Rachel Lefevre.
EMA takes part in the first Green Screen Panel at ShoWest in Las Vegas, highlighting the current and future advances towards a more sustainable theatre experience.
In a massive show of support from the entertainment industry, there is a major expansion of environmental oversight throughout the physical production process, with the placement of new environmental stewards, sustainable production managers and sustainability coordinators at various studios. EMA gathers a committee of all the studios so that the EMA Green Seal program, now in its 8th year, can further explore ways to honor and increase awareness about the sustainable work of Hollywood.
EMA partners with The Green Living Show, Canada’s largest green consumer trade show, held in Toronto. Actor/environmental businessman Colin Firth, his wife, Livia, and their business partner, Nicola Giuggioli, receive the EMA Green Living Award for founding Britain’s first ecological destination store, Eco Age. EMA President Debbie Levin and EMA Board member Amy Smart are on hand to present the award and sit on a panel discussion with Colin and Nicola about easy and workable solutions for leading a sustainable lifestyle.
EMA’s Executive Board, Young Hollywood Board, and Corporate Advisory Board meet at the home of Lyn and Norman Lear for a discussion about water with guest speaker Dr. Farouk El-Baz, in conjunction with The Science & Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. Dr. El-Baz is Research Professor and Director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, and is known for his pioneering work in using space images to explore for groundwater in arid land.
EMA partners with Brita FilterForGood and The Sundance Channel to launch the Brita FilterForGood Film Project, a competition that asks people across the country to share an environmental challenge facing their community.
Three winners are selected to have their ideas turned into short films directed by Sundance filmmakers and screened at a special event during the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. EMA Young Hollywood Board member Emmanuelle Chriqui lends her voice to the project and helps raise awareness on how films can inspire a path to a healthier planet.
EMA continues its partnership with Southern California Edison and Washington, D.C.-based Green Seal on the California Green Communities Challenge, focusing media and public attention on the activities of the ten participating cities working towards environmentally sound practices.
The 20th Annual Environmental Media Awards, hosted by Olivia Munn and Jason Ritter, is held at Warner Bros. Studios for the first time and streamed online on the National Geographic’s YouTube channel. Ted Turner receives the Lifetime Achievement Award and Jeff Skoll receives the Corporate Responsibility Award, with a special anniversary performance by Kenny Loggins, who performed at the 1997 EMA Awards.

EMA’s Young Hollywood Board is formed. Amy Smart is board chair and board members include Nicole Richie, Maroon 5, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Rosario Dawson, Maria Menounos, Emily VanCamp, Anna Getty, Olivia Wilde, Matthew Rhys, Lance Bass, Carter Oosterhouse, and others.
EMA and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) begin an ongoing partnership to support organic gardens and greenery in urban schools across Los Angeles. EMA will directly support a number of school gardens through funding and celebrity mentoring vis-à-vis EMA’s Young Hollywood Board. The kick-off press conference is held at Bernstein High School in Hollywood, with Nicole Richie, Amy Smart, and Anna Getty.
EMA partners with the non-profit, Washington, D.C.-based third party certifier, Green Seal, to recognize productions that implement sustainable initiatives into their production practices. Since 2004, the EMA Green Seal has been awarded to over 100 EMA recipients. The new program has been strengthened with more detailed and exacting criteria, and the Green Seal organization will provide third-party auditing services.
EMA School Garden Program launches to support edible organic gardens in urban schools. In collaboration with partners at Southern California Edison, EMA helps launch the California Green Communities (CGC) campaign. This community-based effort encourages cities to adopt environmentally sound practices. Criteria will include energy efficiency, waste management, water management, air quality, and other issues.
The 2009 Environmental Media Awards are held at Paramount Studios for the first time and are streamed online on wonderwall.msn.com. Sir Richard Branson receives the Corporate Responsibility Award. National Geographic Society receives the Legacy Award. Centropolis Entertainment receives the first ever Green Production Award, and Jason Mraz receives the Missions in Music Award.

EMA debuts an organic T-Shirt line by Alexx Jae for men, women, children, and babies. Celebrities supporting and wearing the T’s include Halle Berry, Anna Faris, Heather Graham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Richie, Amy Smart, and Constance Zimmer.
EMA CEO Debbie Levin appears on the TODAY Show, launching a national cell phone recycling campaign to promote keeping electronics out of landfills.

EMA co-hosts the “Golden-Green Party” with E! Entertainment at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards. The entire event, from décor to food, is sustainable. A tree is planted in honor of each person attending.
EMA partners with Global Cool to host a press conference and dinner in London, at 10 Downing Street, with Prime Minister Tony Blair. The topic is “climate change and how to empower the general public.”
EMA speaks at the Industry Insights Summit on why it is important to make businesses and products environmentally conscious. The 3-day conference is attended by 150 executives and marketers, who define promotional strategies and partnerships.
EMA CEO Debbie Levin leads a panel at the Association of Film Commissioners Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico focusing on creating a sustainable environment while filming on location and is attended by representatives globally.

EMA and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics co-host a Hollywood Forum on Safe Cosmetics, moderated by CEO, Debbie Levin and Amy Smart. The gathering brings together entertainment industry makeup artists and hairstylists to learn about the issues of certain chemicals in cosmetic and personal care products.
EMA hosts the “Green Power Family Hour,” celebrating the environment and teaching adults and children tips on how to keep a greener lifestyle.
EMA teams with BP America and KABC to raise awareness for BP’s A+ for Energy teacher grant campaign and supports the celebratory luncheon honoring the winning California teachers.

EMA takes Earth Day “global.” CNN Headline News showcases green lifestyles and dedicates an entire week, profiling an EMA celebrity every day regarding their environmental behaviors. The segments air several times each day and deliver 1.7 billion impressions. Celebrities included Ed Begley Jr., Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah, Edward Norton and Alicia Silverstone.
EMA partners with Eddie Bauer and Condé Nast Publications help bring national attention to the environment. EMA hosts “Investing in Media that Matters,” a gathering linking the Foundation and Entertainment world with celebrities in Sundance Village with the goal of creating environmentally-oriented independent feature film and television projects. Robert Redford delivers the opening remarks, Pierce Brosnan delivers the keynote address.
EMA participates in Creative Artist Agency’s first environmental symposium, helping attendees learn about the growing environmental movement and the latest advances in hybrid technology.
EMA works with BP, Inc. on A+ For Energy. The program awards two million dollars in grants and scholarships to 300 of California’s educators for teaching energy education and conservation in the classroom.

EMA participates in a trip to Laguna San Ignacio with Pierce Brosnan and Glenn Close to help save the last pristine nursery for Pacific Gray Whales.
EMA co-presents a conference entitled The Stories Kids Care About. The conference discusses how research proves that kids care more about the environment than any other issue and turn to TV and movies more often than any other source for information. Over 150 writers, producers, and executives attend, representing TV networks, major studios, and production companies that reach millions of kids worldwide.

Working with Heal the Bay and NRDC, EMA launches “The Forty Day Fight” to win a critical battle for storm water permits to help clean up Santa Monica Bay.
EMA works with the Coalition for Clean Air to develop a major media campaign to refocus public awareness on the poor air quality in Southern California.
EMA joins forces with NRDC for an environmental justice battle waging in Athens Park, noting that hazardous waste dumps are most often located near low income areas.

Kennedy, Jr., who describes the “Contract with America” as a “stealth attack” on current environmental safeguards, and urges the audience to use the power of television to help Americans understand the connection between protecting the environment and protecting their health.

EMA sponsors a special screening of HBO's environmental documentary, “Earth and the American Dream”, in Washington, DC, with a delegation of actors lending their support.
EMA arranges a briefing with President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, congressional members, environmental leaders and other top environmental officials to discuss environmental issues facing the administration.
EMA introduces a new series of workshops entitled Environmental Dialogues. These salon-style briefings bring writers and producers together with environmental leaders to discuss, question, and debate specific and timely environmental topics.
EMA launches an initiative to encourage the message of on-screen recycling.

EMA receives the President’s Environmental and Conservation Challenge Award from President George H.W. Bush at a Rose Garden Ceremony. The award recognizes outstanding individuals, organizations, or groups who have made a substantial contribution to environmental quality.
EMA publishes “30 Simple Energy Things You Can Do to Save the Earth,” which is geared towards the entertainment community and offers new tips on how to conserve energy.
