EMA's Fall Sustainable Fashion Roundup: Rating Beyoncé's Levi's, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and the Prada Spacesuit
This fall in sustainable fashion, we saw Beyoncé recreate an iconic 80s commercial in her Levi's while the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show made its runway comeback. Plus, a new Prada spacesuit collaboration is taking fashion to the moon. Read on to learn more.
Beyoncé and Levi's hit the laundromat to promote timeless style
One of Levi's' most memorable commercials was its 1985 "Launderette" commercial, featuring model Nick Kamen in his underwear. This month, Beyoncé proved the timelessness of denim in American iconography, recreating the iconic advertisement to launch her new collaboration with Levi's. In the video, Bey visits the laundromat wearing a denim cowboy hat, a white t-shirt, and a pair of reimagined Levi's 501 90's jeans while her song "Levii's Jeans" plays in the background.
While they created the ad to promote Beyoncé's updated product, it also speaks to the timelessness of denim and the circularity of fashion trends. Levi's is currently rated as "Good" in Good on You's sustainable fashion directory, with recommendations to improve its policies and practices on worker's rights.
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is back, but is it better?
The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show returned to the runway after a six-year hiatus, sparked by public accusations of fatphobia and transphobia. The production included performances from LISA, Tyla Banks, and Cher and top models, including Kate Moss, Ashley Graham, and the Hadid sisters.
With the promise of changing for the better, the show tried to improve the brand's diversity and inclusion. However, it has made little progress on sustainability, being rated "Not Good Enough" in Good on You's sustainable fashion directory.
Prada is designing a spacesuit for the first woman on the moon
For NASA's 2026 Artemis III mission, Prada has partnered with NASA to unveil the new spacesuit for the first woman on the moon. This historic design requires high levels of protection and durability to shield the wearer from the extreme conditions of outer space and the Moon's South Pole.
While Prada has a varying track record on sustainability, this collaboration could lead to advancements in material innovation for more durable and functional fashion. The brand is also working to create recycled textiles from fishing nets and plastic bottles and has released a collection of jewelry made from recycled gold.
